About

Surprise has been supporting socially disadvantaged people in Switzerland since 1998. With employment opportunities, offers for participation in social life and low-threshold support, Surprise opens up perspectives and concrete fields of action. This help for self-help activates people's abilities and is thus sustainable. Surprise sensitises the public to social justice, promotes social diversity and provides expert expertise. These goals combine the services offered by Surprise: the street magazine, the social city tours, the street football, the street choir, the gastronomic solidarity network Café Surprise, the job and support programs SurPlus and Chancenarbeitsplatz and the low-threshold social counseling and support at three locations in Basel, Bern and Zurich. Surprise is one of 110 members from 35 countries in the International Network of Street Papers (INSP). As an independent company with a social purpose, Surprise does not work profitably and finances itself without state funds. 65 percent of the revenue is generated by the proceeds of the street magazine, the social city tours and the advertisements, 35 percent through donations, sponsorship and foundation funds.
